Green subdivision taking shape in Derby

HartfordBusiness.com / Matt Pilon

A Derby subdivision that’s billed as the first in Connecticut to be “net-zero ready” is growing.

Developer Mark Nuzzolo of Woodbridge-based Brookside Development has now completed five of seven homes at Singer Village. The most recent was completed in August.

Net-zero ready is a term used to describe a home that’s so efficient that solar panels could provide most or all of its remaining energy needs, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

The first four homes in the subdivision, which received local approvals in 2012, have sold for prices ranging from $349,900 to $443,192, according to a spokeswoman for Brookside.

Nuzzolo’s model home was recognized in the “most affordable” category in Energize Connecticut’s Zero Energy Challenge in 2013. The home saves more than $20,000 in energy expenses over a decade, compared to a regular new home, according to Brookside. The savings are higher if energy costs increase, and when compared to older homes, the company said.
